Skyhaven Systems, LLCMichael C. Kimble Small Business Hydrogen Production Water electrolyzers and MEA QC on-line sensorsSkyhaven Systems is a small business with locations in Steamboat Springs, CO and Westford, MA that focuses on electrochemical technologies. The firm conducts numerous SBIR and BAA government funded programs with a central focus on electrochemical reactors, separators, electrodeposition, H2 generators, PEM-based fuel cells and water electrolyzers, sensors, and materials development.

The firm has a patented quality control inspection system for non-destructively assessing the chemical activity of membrane and electrode assemblies. This has applicability for on-line QC inspection of electrolyzer and fuel cell MEAs during reel-to-reel manufacturing. The firm desires to engage and partner with MEA manufacturers who desire an on-line rapid QC sensor for assessing the quality of catalyzed membranes.

The firm is involved with novel electrochemical reactor designs and materials development. A new water electrolyzer design is being developed that offers a substantially lower capital cost than traditional PEM-based electrolyzers while helping to maximize operational efficiency. Partners are being sought that can conduct mathematical modeling of the electrolyzer to help guide design development, and that can help assess scaled water electrolyzers substantially larger than 25 cm2 active areas.

NC Clean Energy Technology CenterRebekah de la Mora Academic Hydrogen Pilot Projects and Demonstrations  The NC Clean Energy Technology Center, an extension of North Carolina State University, was founded in December 1987 as the North Carolina Solar Center. For the last 35 years, the Center has worked closely with partners in government, industry, academia, and the non-profit community while evolving to include a greater geographic scope and array of clean energy technologies. As a result of this evolution, the Center has grown into a state agency respected for its assistance to the burgeoning “clean tech” sector in North Carolina, as well as one of the premier clean energy centers of knowledge in the United States. The Center provides services to the businesses and citizens of North Carolina and beyond relating to the development and adoption of clean energy technologies. Through its programs and activities, we envision and seek to promote the development and use of clean energy in ways that stimulate a sustainable economy while reducing dependence on foreign sources of energy, and mitigating the environmental impacts of fossil fuel use.

We provide technical assistance, policy analysis, and workforce development training related to clean energy. In addition, we host the DOE's CHP Technical Assistance Partnership in the Southeast, and we have access to NCSU's extensive research resources. Our suite of services provides a holistic approach to clean energy adoption, integrating technological advancement with real-world applications, regulations, problems, solutions, and opportunities. We track hydrogen policy developments at the federal and state level, and understanding the regulatory landscape is key to developing effective hydrogen solutions; this interdisciplinary approach ensures ideas and technologies are more likely to reach deployment.

University of MissouriProf. Yangchuan Xing Academic Fuel Cells Topic 3. Advanced Electrolyzer Technology and Component DevelopmentWe study electrocatalysts, in particular corrosion resistant catalyst support. We have developed a unique coating process, condensed layer deposition (CLD), to make metal oxide nanocoatings on a substrate. This is a low-cost liquid process to making nanocoatings. For example, we can coat carbon black or carbon nanotubes, or other materials, with acid resistant metal oxide nanocoatings (such as TiO2, Nb2O5, etc.), anywhere from 1 to 100 nm. We can incorporate iridium (Ir), or other elements, in/on the metal oxide nanocoatings for high utilization with reduced PGM loading. This is expected to lead to a highly efficient and active OER catalyst. We would like to join a team to contribute to the electrocatalyst aspect.
