| | Forest Concepts is a biomass supply chain technology and systems company with more than twenty-five years of experience in the forest, urban, and agricultural biomass feedstock arena. We work throughout the supply chain from sources to the throat of reactors or industrial manufacturing processes. Our engineers actively engage with academic and research communities as well as technical societies. Our small company is based in HUB zone in Auburn, Washington – just south of Seattle. We provide products and services globally. Our capabilities are delivered by three overlapping teams. FC Analytics develops biomass characterization methods, laboratory equipment, and mathematical simulations/models that inform design and operation of biomass processing facilities. The FC Biomaterials biomass processing and production unit processes FC or client-supplied raw biomass of all types (woody, herbaceous, other) through our custom milling, screening, and drying equipment systems to produce reactor/conversion-ready industrial and renewable energy feedstocks. The Forest Concepts systems development and professional services team conducts contract research and provides advisory/planning services spanning biomass supply chains from source to reactor and beyond. A key benefit to clients is that we live in both the development and commercial space. Our experienced development team has earned 31 patents across these technology areas. Our approximately ten full-time team members leverage the expertise of a broad network of universities, labs, and others. More recently, in partnership with a cadre of third-party vendors we have ramped-up equipment manufacturing and fully integrated plug-and-play multi-brand pre-processing systems at pilot through commercial scale. FC Analytics: Feedstock characterization to deliver engineering data, operational functional characteristics, and other physical/mechanical properties data. FC Biomass Processing: Our processing facility features its patented Crumbler® size reduction technology, orbital screening and an advanced moving bed dryer, amongst other standard processing equipment. The system can produce a variety of sizes of uniform, flowable particles down to 1mm from high moisture biomass without drying or before drying. FC Systems Development: We developed an innovative Simulation of Processing Systems for Techno-Economic Analysis (SiPS TEA) software to rapidly analyze multiple processing facility permutations. |

| Technoeconomic analysis and dispatch optimization for CHP, thermal energy storage, battery storage, chillers, geothermal and microgrids; seeking lab partner for commercialization, validation and cost share. | JIS Energy LLC is a small business that develops and operates CogenS, a commercial technoeconomic analysis and optimization platform for distributed energy systems. We are seeking a National Laboratory partner for the FY26+FY27 TCF Technology Specific lab call, and can provide both cost share and a route to market for lab-developed technology.
WHAT THE PLATFORM DOES CogenS sizes and dispatches multi-technology energy systems and returns full technical, economic and emissions results. Technologies covered: combined heat and power (CHP), battery energy storage (BESS), chillers and cooling towers, boilers, thermal energy storage (TES), geothermal and ground-source heat pumps, heat-pump and conventional water heating, EV charging, and islanded or grid-connected microgrids.
Sizing and dispatch are co-optimized in a single linear/mixed-integer program at 15, 20, 30 or 60-minute resolution, against real utility tariff structures: time-of-use energy, monthly demand charges, fixed charges, tiered rates, fuel and makeup-water costs, and CO2 pricing. Outputs include NPV, IRR, simple and discounted payback, benefit-cost ratio, total cost of ownership, levelized cost and emissions, plus Energy-as-a-Service structures (PPA, concession, tolling, shared savings).
WHAT WE BRING TO A LAB PARTNERSHIP 1. Commercialization route. CogenS is deployed today with paying customers. A lab-developed model, control method or optimization algorithm integrated into the platform reaches practicing engineers on release, rather than remaining a research artifact. 2. Cost share. We can contribute in-kind cost share as platform licenses, engineering labor, compute and validation datasets. 3. Validation. We maintain harnesses that benchmark our engines against EnergyPlus, SAM and other reference tools, and can validate lab methods against commercial baselines and measured project data. 4. Deployment data and market pull. Live customer projects across commercial, institutional, industrial and district-energy settings - load profiles, tariffs, equipment selections - plus customers who can speak to market need.
AREAS OF INTEREST Buildings and industrial decision support; grid-interactive and microgrid dispatch; thermal and electrical storage control; geothermal technoeconomics; and controls or optimization methods that need a commercial delivery vehicle.

Geothermal
| Topic 3 - Hydrocarbons and Geothermal Energy Office (HGEO): Geothermal exploration and characterization | Helios X, LLC is developing a geothermal resource on privately held, deeded ranchland in the eastern Great Basin (Nevada). The resource is USGS-identified and has been independently assessed at reconnaissance level; we treat it as unconfirmed until drilled. Springs and wells on the property are accessible for sampling, and landowner coordination is in hand.
Our need is an independent temperature and geochemical characterization: a structured review of the existing public record (federal and state geothermal assessments, historical water chemistry, geophysics), and advanced multicomponent geothermometry on newly collected fluid samples from on-property springs and wells to estimate deep reservoir temperature and last-equilibration conditions. A screen of the same fluids for critical-mineral and rare-earth content would strengthen the effort where consistent with scope.
We seek a national laboratory partner with demonstrated expertise in multicomponent geothermometry, geothermal fluid geochemistry, and Basin & Range resource characterization. The scope is sized to a single award, and the field program can execute in the fall 2026 sampling season. Private land, existing site access, and landowner coordination remove the siting friction that commonly delays field programs on federal ground. |
