WWUNipun GoelAssistant Professor Academic Solar Thermal Energy StorageWestern Washington University is home to the Institute for Energy Studies (IES). I am currently a tenure track faculty with IES with area of research focused on large scale thermal energy storage using solid particles. Western Washington University is currently partnered with The University of Tulsa and Boise State University in developing an improved particle flow control mechanism that will provide a better degree of flow control on particles entering the receiver and/or heat exchanger, under the DoE grant DE-EE0010251.
We have previously worked on evaluation of abrasive and impact wear from solid particles at CSP relevant conditions. We are also in the process of developing CFD and DEM models that can predict wear in material from particles and estimate thermal conductivity in solid particle media.
Some of the capabilities of at Western includes test equipment’s such as calorimeters, photo spectrometers, as well as custom built particle flow control system.

SLBGavin Dillingham  Large Business Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization Office (IEDO) Topic 1: Collaborative Alignment for Clean Hydrogen and Topic 2: Collaborative Alignment for LDESHydrogen
Currently most hydrogen is produced from natural gas by processes that emit large amounts of CO2. However low-carbon hydrogen is expected to play a key role in the energy transition, either as a clean fuel or as a feedstock for chemicals and sustainable fuels. SLB provides technology and subject matter expertise for both blue and green hydrogen.

SLB has invested in ZEG, a Norwegian start-up that has developed a new technology for efficient hydrogen production from natural gas coupled with an integrated carbon capture process. The CO2 capture rate is more than 95%.

We have also advanced our development of a solid oxide electrolyzer that uses a thermally charged electrolysis process that consumes industrial heat through our public/private partnership – Genvia. Currently, we are working on pilot projects with multinational companies in petrochemicals, cement, and steel industries.

Energy Storage
SLB integrated long- and short-duration energy storage solution is based on nickel-hydrogen electrochemistry, to provide the most robust, durable, and safe battery energy storage system for commercial, industrial, and grid-scale applications. The battery technology was developed by NASA and performed reliably for more than 30 years, in key space missions such as Mars Rover, and Hubble Telescope. It was then refined by Stanford University to enhance performance and reduce cost.

Its durability minimizes maintenance and degradation. The result is a totally safe solution that addresses the inherent intermittency of renewable energy by providing short and long-duration energy storage—affordably, reliably, and sustainably.
