Texas A&M UniversityIrfan KhanAssistant Professor Academic Renewable Energy Integration (REI) Topic 3 - Undergraduate Senior Design and/or Research ProjectDr. Khan has worked extensively in the areas of power converter design, electric vehicle fast charging, renewable energy integration (both stand-alone and grid-connected), machine learning, and marine cybersecurity. Additionally, Dr. Khan has conducted studies to optimize the cost of alternate energy sources powered EV charging stations for both off-grid and grid-connected systems. Moreover, the research team has extensive experience of impact analysis studies, identifying grid congestion, and maximizing EV penetration in utility grids. Dr. Khan has published research and review articles on electric vehicle charging, machine learning-based predictive maintenance, and cybersecurity concerns of energy systems.

Dr. Khan's team supervised and mentored the Texas A&M University team, which participated in the Marine Energy Collegiate Competition (Funded by DOE National Renewable Energy Laboratory) for two consecutive years (2021-2022 and 2022-2023). The team worked on the concept of "Ocean Wave Energy Converter: NaviBuoys", which utilizes wave motion to power navigational lights. The generated energy from the wave is collected through the power take-off (PTO) system. As the energy generated is intermittent and discontinuous, a state-of-the-art energy storage system is also incorporated. The team pitched the final report in the MECC 2022, in the one-week NREL event (23 – 27 May 2022).

Binghamton University (SUNY)Cosan DaskiranAssistant Professor Academic Water Power Subtopic 1b-1c and Topic 4My expertise lies in conducting single-phase- and multi-phase, turbulent computational fluid dynamics simulations (CFD) focusing on marine and wind energy converters such as tidal turbines and wind turbines, examining their interactions with waves and free surfaces. We validate these numerical models by comparing them with experimental measurements, employing both open-source tools like OpenFOAM and commercial software like ANSYS-Fluent. We primarily perform our simulations on high-performance clusters (HPC) to ensure timely results.

Sandia National LaboratoriesJorge A. Leon-QuirogaR&D Electrical Engineer Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) Renewable Energy Integration (REI)  I am interested on studying grid integration of hybrid renewable energy systems that include offshore wind turbines and wave energy converters. I am also interested on studying, numerically and experimentally, different PTO architectures to optimize energy generation in WECs.
I am currently working at Sandia National Labs, in the Renewable Energy and Distributed Systems Integration group. I have been working on grid integration of renewable energy using a Hardware-in-the-loop platform that allows emulation of wind energy systems, wave energy converters, and energy storage systems. The platform can be configured to emulate a wide variety of renewable energy systems. In the laboratory, we have a grid emulator that allows to study different challenges associated with integrating renewable energy systems to to the power grid. The HIL platform can be coupled to any numerical model developed in Matlab/Simulink.

Thornton TomasettiEmily KunkelVice President - Applied Science Large Business Wind Scalable Offshore Wind, Marine Energy, and AquacultureThornton Tomasetti has worked on many projects across the US and UK in the wind energy sector.
• Thornton Tomasetti, in partnership with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and the University of Maine, evaluated the use of the FAST code for the simulation of a 1/50th scale model of the NREL reference turbine supported on a tension leg platform (TLP). The project identified potential improvements in FAST for application to floating wind turbine systems.
• For EO.N, issues arose at Robin Rigg , Scotland’s first offshore wind farm, with the transition pieces grouted connections failing. To support the investigation and remedy for this issue we conducted finite element analysis in order to establish how different connection failure modes will affect the overall dynamic response of monopile turbines to identify possible continuous monitoring schemes that could be employed for the purposes of integrity assurance. This included analysis of sea bed scour and resulting impact on the stability of the turbine structure.
• A study to evaluate and compare the API and IEC standards for offshore wind turbine support structures was carried out for NREL. The study evaluated the levels of structural reliability produced for common structures designed following the requirements of either standard. The results of this study were to provide all stakeholders with specific guidance for the design of offshore wind turbine support structures in U.S. waters.
• Completion of a concept development study aimed at assessing the state of the practice in offshore wind systems, and developing new support structures to expand their range of applicability, given deeper water and harsher environmental conditions (Confidential client).
• Offshore farm foundation assessment for GE Wind Energy.
• Assessing new technologies and requirements for building larger wind systems in deeper water locations and at greater distances from shore (working with NREL).
• Development of software (WEP-View) for the US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) – a tool to determine the electricity and revenue generation potential for offshore wind farms.
• We developed a tool for the UK Health & Safety Executive enable risk assessments to be undertaken for onshore wind farms. This software has been used for clients to understand the risk (e.g., blade failure, ice throw etc.) when wind farms are located in close proximity to occupied buildings, power lines and pipelines.
