New Mexico TechTan NguyenProfessor Academic Enhanced Geothermal Systems  We are planning on introducing advanced fiber optic sensing technology for use as downhole logging and monitoring tools in high-temperature and hostile geothermal wells. We will collaborate with Paulsson, Inc., Los Alamos National Lab, and Science & Resource Stewardship Division - Valles Caldera National Preserve New Mexico to conduct testing on newly developed fiber optic sensors integrated into logging and monitoring tools. These sensors are coated with polyimide, a polymer known for its high heat resistance, making them well-suited for deployment in challenging geothermal environments. The team intends to utilize temperature, pressure, strain, and acoustic sensors to monitor the quality of cement behind casing, as well as detect potential issues such as leaks in casing and tubing. Collaborating with Valles Caldera National Preserve in New Mexico, we plan to deploy these sensors in one of their geothermal wells to evaluate the sensors’ performance under temperatures exceeding 250°C over several days. To ensure accuracy, existing data from these wells and nearby sites will be employed to calibrate the measured data. Additionally, commercial software will be utilized to estimate temperature and pressure variations along the wellbore, providing another source of data to validate the measured data.

Los Alamos National LabMeng MengStaff Scientist Federal Government Enhanced Geothermal Systems  I have strong background in wellbore integrity analysis and operations. My thermoporoelastic modeling tool predicts the safe operational envelope of wellbore during injection and production. This model has been applied successfully to multiple geothermal projects. It is well suited for this topic. One paper example is our SPE J paper:https://www.osti.gov/servlets/purl/1844954

Biointerphase, Inc.Noah SnyderCEO Small Business Enhanced Geothermal Systems  Biointerphase is a bioengineering R&D company located in Pittsburgh PA with core competencies in biomaterials and biosignals intelligence. One of our technologies, THERMOPHASE, improves the performance of heat exchangers by increasing heat transfer efficiency and reducing fouling. The technology was developed through funding from the Department of Defense and Department of Energy. A technical demonstration for THERMOPHASE on power plant condensers was recently completed and more information can be found in the Technical Report available at: https://www.osti.gov/biblio/1907938.

THERMOPHASE can be applied to existing or new heat exchangers by flushing the material through the component. Afterwards, there is an immediate improvement in heat transfer and a resistance to future fouling. We would like to join a team where the demonstration of THERMOPHASE for critical heat exchangers in RTES systems could be valuable.

In addition to THERMOPHASE, our team has expertise in monitoring heat transfer performance in operating systems and developing AI solutions for thermal management.

University of HoustonHarish Sarma KrishnamoorthyAssociate Professor, ECE Department Academic Enhanced Geothermal Systems Power converter R&D, high temperature electronicsI am a recent recipient (as PI) of a DoE/ARPA-E OPEN-2021 award (https://arpa-e.energy.gov/technologies/projects/mini-pulps-miniaturized-pulsed-power-systems-mission-critical-applications) and an NSF CAREER grant (https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=2239966&HistoricalAwards=false), among others, developing power converters and electronics for critical applications - primarily dealing with high temperatures and pressures.

I have over 5 years of industry experience, almost half of it at SLB (formerly, Schlumberger) working on high temperature electronics above 175 degree Celsius. More information about our expertise and facilities can be found here: https://pemsec.ece.uh.edu/researchprojects/.

I am interested to partner with potential applicants on this FOA, contributing toward advanced electronics and power converters for high temperatures (>120 degree Celsius).
